Bluejays Split Doubleheader With 16th-Ranked Titans

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team opened CCIW play by splitting a doubleheader with 16th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University. The Bluejays took the opener 4-3 before falling 9-1 in the night cap.

ELMHURST 4, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 3 - Elmhurst kicked off CCIW play by upending the Titans 4-3 in the Bluejays' first game in over a week.

The Bluejays jumped on the scoreboard quickly as Alyssa Jasinski roped a two-out single to right field to drive in Katie Boals in the bottom of the first. Elmhurst made it 2-0 in the third when Clare Bukowski belted a solo homer to center field.

Illinois Wesleyan (17-4, 4-2 CCIW) scored a run in the fifth, but the Bluejays answered right back in the bottom of the inning with a run-scoring double from Jasinski and an RBI single from Tiffany Potthast to take a 4-1 lead.

The Titans pulled to within a run in the sixth inning on a Sara Rogers two-run homer to left. Illinois Wesleyan put the tying run on base in the seventh inning, but Sara Platt lined out to end the game.

Jasinski swung a red-hot bat for the Bluejays, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Meg Griffin also collected three hits for Elmhurst and scored a run. Rogers led the Titans at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in.

Potthast earned the win for Elmhurst, tossing a complete game to improve to 5-1 on the season. She scattered nine hits and four walks while allowing just three earned runs in seven innings. Molly McCready took the loss for the Titans, dropping to 8-2 in the process. McCready lasted just 2.1 innings and surrendered five hits, two walks and two runs while striking out four.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 9, ELMHURST 1 - Elmhurst could not stop Rogers as the Titans' second baseman finished 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBI to lead Illinois Wesleyan to a 9-1 win.

The Bluejays scored first in the top of the second. Jasinski doubled, moved to third on Ele Walter's bunt single, and came around to score on a throwing error on the TItans.

Elmhurst's lead was short lived as Illinois Wesleyan scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, all coming with two outs and the bases empty. Rogers delivered the big blow in the form of a bases clearing, three-run double to left center.

The Titans tacked on two more runs in the fourth, another in the fifth and finally scored a pair of runs in the sixth to earn the walk-off victory by the eight-run rule.

Elmhurst was limited to only five hits in the loss as Illinois Wesleyan's Jenna Noland went the distance, allowing just one unearned run in six innings of work. She fanned eight while not issuing a walk. Katie Boals took the loss for Elmhurst, surrendering nine hits and seven runs in five innings of work.
