Softball Team Sweeps Pair From Millikin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team evened its season record at 15-15 by sweeping a doubleheader from Millikin University. The Bluejays took game one 11-6 and finished the sweep with a 6-3 victory in game two.

ELMHURST 11, MILLIKIN 6 - Elmhurst (5-9 CCIW) jumped out to an early eight-run lead and hung on to defeat the Big Blue 11-6 in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Millikin (17-20, 1-11 CCIW) scored a run in the top of the first, but the Bluejays answered back immediately with five runs in the bottom of the first. Tiffany Potthast, Bella Masini, Alyssa Jasinski and Katie Boals all drove in runs for the Bluejays in the first.

Elmhurst loaded the bases with no outs in the second and scored runs on RBI groundouts from Potthast and Masini. A third run came home to score on a Millikin error to give Elmhurst an 8-1 lead. Clare Bukowski singled home a run in the third to put Elmhurst up by eight.

Millikin scored four runs in the fourth to cut the Bluejays' lead in half. Raeshel Braden delivered the key hit for the Big Blue, cracking a three-run homer to left field. Millikin added an unearned run in the top of the fifth to pull to within three runs, but Elmhurst put the game away in the sixth as Katie Boals smashed a two-run homer to left center.

Walter, Masini and Boals all recorded two hits apiece in the win. Boals drove in a team-leading three RBI.

Potthast picked up the victory for Elmhurst, tossing all seven innings and allowing eight hits and six runs. She walked one while fanning five.

ELMHURST 6, MILLIKIN 3 - The Bluejays scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and finish the doubleheader sweep of the Big Blue.

Elmhurst raced out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second inning. With the bases empty and two outs, Katie Boals doubled to left center and then scored on Mikayla Melone's RBI single. Stephanie Hintz followed with a base hit to drive in Melone and put Elmhurst on top 2-0. The Bluejays added a run in the fifth on Tiffany Potthast's RBI double.

After being held scoreless for five innings, Millikin evened the score at three with a three-run outburst in the sixth. After a single and an error allowed the Big Blue cut the Bluejays' lead down to one, Millikin's Abbie Tinnan blasted a two-run homer to left to knot the score at three.

Elmhurst quickly regained the lead in the seventh as Hintz singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on Meg Griffin's double. Bukowski put Elmhurst back in front with a two-run double to right. Bukowski came home to score on an RBI single from Masini.

Hintz finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Bukowski, Masini and Boals recorded two hits apiece in the victory.

Boals evened her record at 7-7 on the season by picking up the victory. Boals scattered six hits and three runs over seven innings of work. She fanned four while not issuing a walk.
