Softball Team Takes Two at Chicago

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team swept both ends of a doubleheader at the University of Chicago, defeating the Maroons 2-1 in game one and finishing the day with a 6-2 win in game two.

Elmhurst improved to 13-15 overall with the victories while Chicago slipped to 23-7 on the year.

ELMHURST 2, CHICAGO 1 - The Bluejays scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to deal Chicago a 2-1 loss in the opening game of the twin bill.

Chicago plated an unearned run in the top of the first and the Maroon's Jordan Poole made the lead hold up for six innings. The Bluejays loaded the bases in the fourth with just one out, but Elmhurst lined into a double play to end the inning.

The Bluejays broke through in the seventh. Tiffany Potthast singled to lead off. Potthast beat a throw to second base on Bella Masini's ground ball to put runners on at first and second. Alyssa Jasinski was hit by a pitch to loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Katie Boals drew a walk to force home the tying run. After another strikeout, a Chicago error on Meg Griffin's ground ball allowed Masini to score and gave Elmhurst its first lead of the game.

Boals picked up the victory for the Bluejays, limiting Chicago to only seven hits and one earned run. She did not issue a walk and struck out one while tossing all seven innings. Poole (14-2) suffered just her second loss of the season for Chicago, scattering four hits, three walks and two runs over seven innings.

ELMHURST 6, CHICAGO 2 - The Bluejays finished the sweep of Chicago by toppling the Maroons 6-2 in game two.

Elmhurst jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from Breanna Thompson and a run-scoring groundout from Lauren Rismondo. The Bluejays broke the game open in the fifth, cashing in on a Marron error to extend the inning. Alyssa Jasinski delivered the crushing blow, ripping a two-out, bases-clearing double to left center to put Elmhurst on top 5-0.

Chicago sliced Elmhurst's lead down to three after Kristin Lopez launched a two-run homer in the sixth, but the Bluejays tacked on insurance run in the seventh as Ele Walter scored on a Chicago error.

Walter and Meg Griffin recorded two hits apiece for the Bluejays while Jasinski drove in three and also scored a run.

Potthast notched the win for the Bluejays, improving to 7-6 in the process. Potthast scattered nine hits, three walks and two runs while tossing all seven innings.

Elmhurst hosts Millikin University on Sunday, April 27.
