Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team moved to 11-15 on the season after splitting a doubleheader with Wheaton College. Elmhurst suffered a 5-3 loss in game one but bounced back to take the night cap 6-2.
WHEATON 5, ELMHURST 3 - Elmhurst dropped the opening game of the doubleheader 5-3 in eight innings after Wheaton's Stacy Cladis hit a two-run homer in the eighth.
Wheaton scored twice in the first inning on an Alyssa Leonard two-run single and the Thunder extended their lead to three on an RBI from Katie Yergler in the fifth.
Elmhurst broke through in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
Meg Griffin and
Tiffany Potthast both singled and
Clare Bukowski smashed a three-run homer to left field to even the score at three.
The tie did not last as Cladis hit a two-out homer in the eighth to hand the Thunder the victory.
Elmhurst outhit Wheaton 11-9 in the contest but the Bluejays stranded 11 runners on base. Griffin recorded four of Elmhurst's 11 hits in the loss. Bukowski,
Ele Walter and
Brianna Thompson added two hits apiece in the loss.
Potthast took the loss for the Bluejays, scattering nine hits and five runs over eight innings. She walked one and fanned one. Abby Butler scored the win for Wheaton in relief, scattering six hits and three runs over three innings of work. Katie Thornton made the start for Wheaton and exited the game after four innings and then returned to pitch the eighth inning and record the save. Thornton allowed just five hits and two walks while striking out nine over five total innings of work.
ELMHURST 6, WHEATON 2 - Elmhurst salvaged a doubleheader split by taking game two 6-2.
The Bluejays scored early and often, tacking on runs in each of the first four innings to race out to a 5-0 lead.
Stephanie Hintz drove in a run in the first and
Rachel Cooke added an RBI ground out in the second to stake Elmhurst to a 2-0 lead.
Bukowski slugged her second homer of the day in the third, blasting a two-run shot to left field. An unearned run in the fourth, gave Elmhurst a 5-0 cushion.
Wheaton cut into the lead in the fifth on a two-run shot from Yergler, but the Bluejays tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single from Walter.
Walter paced the Elmhurst offense with three hits while also scoring a run and driving in one. Griffin added a pair of hits in the victory.
Katie Boals picked up the victory for the Bluejays, scattering just six hits and two runs over seven innings. Boals walked only one while fanning four.
Elmhurst hosts Millikin University on Sunday, April 27.
