Elmhurst Drops Two at Augustana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team dropped to 10-12 on the season after dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Augustana College. The Bluejays were shut out 2-0 in game one and then dropped game two 5-2.

Elmhurst slipped to 2-8 in CCIW play with the losses while Augustana upped its record to 27-9 overall and 8-4 in the CCIW win the victories.

AUGUSTANA 2, ELMHURST 0 - Laura Behnke broke a scoreless tie with a two-run walk-off homer to lead Augustana to a 2-0 victory in game one. The loss marked the third time this season the Bluejays have suffered a walk-off CCIW loss via a home run.

Both squads had chances to score before the seventh inning. Augustan had runners at third in the first, third and fourth inning, but the Bluejays' Katie Boals pitched out of the jam each time. Elmhurst had a runner reach third base in the second, fourth and sixth innings, but also failed to come up with a two-out hit.

Augustana had two outs and the bases empty in the seventh when Jennifer Gray singled. Behnke followed with a two-run blast to right field to hand the Vikings the win.

Meg Griffin and Alyssa Jasinski recorded two hits apiece in the loss.

Boals took the loss for Elmhurst, working 6.2 innings and scattering six hits, three walks and two runs. Sarah Hintz picked up the win for Augustana, surrendering just six hits while striking out two and tossing the shutout.

AUGUSTANA 5, ELMHURST 2 - Augustana scored twice in the first and added solo runs in the second, fourth and fifth to pull away for the 5-2 win and finish the sweep.

The Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead, sending eight batters to the plate and loading the bases. The Vikings made it 3-0 in the second on a Krista Watson RBI single.

Elmhurst broke through with a run in the second on a Bella Masini RBI single. Elmhurst closed to within a run in the third after Clare Bukowski singled home a run.

Augustana tacked on insurance runs in the fourth and fifth to hold on for the victory. After totaling seven hits in the first three innings, the Bluejays were held to only one hit and one base runner over the final four innings.

Masini led Elmhurst's offense with three hits in the loss. Bukwoski collected two hits for the Bluejays.

Tiffany Potthast suffered the loss for the Bluejays, allowing eight hits, five walks and five runs while striking out one in seven innings. Christie Wiersema earned the win in relief for Augustana, allowing only three hits and one run over the final five innings of work.

Elmhurst plays at Benedictine University on April 22.
