Box Score 2 KENOSHA, Wis. - After dropping the first game game of a doubleheader 2-1 at Carthage College, the Elmhurst softball team defeated the Lady Reds 4-2 in game two to salvage a split.
CARTHAGE 2, ELMHURST 1 - Elmhurst (9-9, 2-6 CCIW) dropped its sixth straight contest after falling in the opening game of the doubleheader despite outhitting Carthage 8-4.
Elmhurst grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second after
Ele Walter bunted her way on base and then scored on
Clare Bukowski's RBI double.
Carthage evened the score in the bottom of the third with just one hit. Alyse Mikolas singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Mikolas moved to third and then scored after Elmhurst pitcher
Katie Boals was called for a pair of illegal pitches.
Elmhurst had a scoring chance in the fifth. With one out,
Bella Masini singled and moved to second on Boals' double, but a ground out and a line out ended the scoring threat.
Carthage (14-10, 5-5 CCIW) strung together three hits in the fifth inning on took the lead on a Bryanna Heckel run-scoring single.
The Bluejays put the tying run on second base to open the sixth inning, but a pair of strike outs and a pop up ended the Bluejays' chances.
Masini and Bukowski finished with two hits apiece in the loss.
Boals suffered the loss, despite allowing just four hits and two earned runs in six inning of work. Makenzie Walker earned the win in relief for Carthage, tossing five innings and allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out three.
ELMHURST 4, CARTHAGE 2 - Tiffany Potthast drove in all four Elmhurst runs and broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to end Elmhurst's six-game slide.
Carthage scored a run in the third and added a run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead before the Bluejays finally broke through. Elmhurst stranded six runners through the first four innings before coming to life. Masini led off the inning with an infield single.
Ele Walter sacrifice bunt was thrown away by Carthage giving Elmhurst runners on the corners with no outs. After Walter moved to second on a ball in the dirt, Potthast stroked a single through the right side to even the score at two.
Potthast came through again for the Bluejays in the sixth. With runners on first and second with two outs, Potthast looped a single past Carthage's infield into center field. Masini and Walter were running on the play and both came around to score.
Potthast finished 2-for-4 and drove in all four runs. Masini added three hits and scored two runs while Walter collected a pair of hits and also scored twice.
Potthast earned the win from the circle, improving to 6-3 in the process. She limited Carthage to six hits and just one earned run. She fanned two while not issuing a walk.
Elmhurst plays a doubleheader at Augustana College on Saturday, April 19.
