Softball Team Drops Pair to North Park

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team slid to 9-9 on the season after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to North Park University. The Bluejays fell 2-1 in game one and suffered a 6-4 walk-off loss in game two.

NORTH PARK 2, ELMHURST 1 - North Park scored a pair of runs in the opening inning and made them stand up as the Vikings topped the Bluejays 2-1 in the opener.

A pair of walks and a pair of wild pitches along with an RBI single from Nicole Kruckman provided North Park with an early 2-0 in the top of the first.

Elmhurst sliced the lead in half on a Tiffany Potthast solo home run to center. The Bluejays had the tying and winning runs in scoring position in the seventh, but pinch runner Bri Gezloff was thrown at the plate on an infield grounder and Rachel Cooke flew out to end the game.

Potthast was the hard-luck loser for the Bluejays, falling to 5-3 in the process. She tossed seven innings and scattered five hits and three walks while fanning three. Potthast also recorded two of Elmhurst's five hits in the loss.

Katy Ortinau improved to 5-5 with the win for the Vikings. Ortinau allowed just one run and five hits while fanning five in seven innings of work.

NORTH PARK 6, ELMHURST 4 - A pair of home runs in the bottom of the seventh helped North Park (12-12, 2-2 CCIW) overcome a three-run deficit and stun the Bluejays in game two.

North Park grabbed an early lead on a solo home run from Cyerra Rodriguez in the second, but the Bluejays answered back, taking the lead on a two-run double by Meg Griffin in the top of the fourth. Alyssa Jasinski drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to put the Bluejays up 3-1. Elmhurst (1-5 CCIW) took advantage of a North Park error in the seventh to go up 4-1 on Jasinski's RBI single.

The Bluejays retired the first batter in the bottom of the seventh, but back-to-back singles brought the tying run to the plate and Mykala Walton evened the score by smacking a three-run homer to center. After a hit batter and a fielders choice left the Vikings with one on and two out, Kaity Olson slugged a walk-off, two-run homer to right to give North Park the 6-4 win.

Griffin and Mikayla Melone recorded two hits apiece for the Bluejays in the loss.

Katie Boals took the loss for Elmhurst, allowing nine hits and six runs in 6.2 innings of work. Boals struck out four while not issuing a walk.

Elmhurst travels to Carthage College on Thursday, April 17, for a CCIW doubleheader.
