Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Carthage College to fall to 1-9 in CCIW play this season.
Carthage (23-7, 10-2 CCIW) tipped the Bluejays 2-0 in eight innings in game one and finished the sweep with a 6-3 victory in game two.
CARTHAGE 2, ELMHURST 0 - Carthage broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning with a pair of runs to pull away for a 2-0 victory.
Elmhurst had a pair of chances to score early but came up empty twice.
Tiffany Potthast tripled to right field to lead off the fifth inning but was stranded at third.
Clare Bukowski doubled to open the seventh inning, but was also left at third.
An RBI single from Olivia Scott and a bases loaded hit batter accounted for Carthage's two runs in the eighth.
Elmhurst was limited to only five hits in the loss.
Tiffany Potthast pitched well despite taking the loss. She scattered seven hits and two runs over eight innings of work. She walked three and fanned three.
Carthage's Krystina Leezer picked up the win, tossing eight shutout innings and allowing just five hits while striking out five.
CARTHAGE 6, ELMHURST 3 - Elmhurst outhit Carthage 12-6 in the contest, but the Bluejays stranded 11 runners and committed three errors allowing Carthage to earn a 6-3 victory.
An Elmhurst error in the first inning opened the door for Carthage to score three unearned runs with two coming on a homer from Scott.
After Elmhurst pulled to within a run in the fifth inning, Carthage capitalized on another Elmhurst error to score a pair of unearned runs.
Lindsey Mikulecky,
Meg Griffin, Bukowski, Potthast and
Ele Walter all finished with two hits apiece for the Bluejays. Mikulecky and
Stephanie Hintz each drove in a run.
Katie Boals took the loss for Elmhurst, tossing six innings and allowing just one earned run. She scattered six and four walks while striking out four.
Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on Thursday (April 25).
