Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team continued its red-hot start on its Florida road trip, defeating both Western Connecticut State and Concordia (Wis.) to improve to 9-1 on the season.
Elmhurst upped its record to 7-1 on the 12-game road trip. The Bluejays have now won six straight contests. Elmhurst opened with an 11-8 win over Western Connecticut State and then doubled up Concordia (Wis.) 4-2 to cap the day.
ELMHURST 11, WESTERN CONNECTICUT 8 - After failing to protect a seven-run lead, the Bluejays scored three runs over the final three innings to pull away for an 11-8 win.
The Bluejays jumped out to an 8-1 lead after an inning and a half, scoring three runs in the first and five in the second.
Katie Boals,
Clare Bukowski,
Lindsey Mikulecky and
Stephanie Hintz all drove in runs in the team's five-run outburst in the second inning.
Western Connecticut battled back, scoring four in the bottom of the second and evening the game at eight with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Elmhurst went back on top in the fifth inning when
Meg Griffin singled home a pair of runs with two outs. Griffin added an RBI single in the seventh to make the final score 11-8.
Masini finished with three hits and two runs scored to spark the Bluejays' offense. Griffin added two hits and three RBI while
Ele Walter added two hits and scored two runs. Boals drove in two runs and scored a pair of runs.
Boals made the start from the mound and took a no-decision, working four innings and allowing nine hits and seven earned runs.
Tiffany Potthast improved to 4-1 on the year by earning the win in relief. Potthast pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while fanning two.
ELMHURST 4, CONCORDIA 2 - Elmhurst broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 4-2 win over Concordia University (Wis.).
Elmhurst grabbed a 2-1 lead after a two-run third inning. Griffin singled home a run and
Rachel Cooke was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run.
After Concordia evened the score in the top of the sixth, the Bluejays reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Mikulecky singled home the game-winning run and then scored on a two-out single from Boals.
Mikulecky, Griffin and Boals collected two hits apiece in the win.
Potthast tossed a complete game to record her fifth victory of the season. She scattered five hits and two earned runs while walking three and striking out one.
Elmhurst takes on Grove City and Wisconsin-Rievr Falls on Monday (March 25).
