Softball Team Wins Pair of One-Run Contests

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team upped its record to 5-1 on the season by scoring one-run victories over SUNY-Geneseo and D'Youville on the team's Florida road trip.

Elmhurst opened the day with a 6-5 come-from-behind win over SUNY-Geneseo and then capped the day by rallying for a 5-4 win over D'Youville.

ELMHURST 6, SUNY-GENESEO 5 - Elmhurst fell behind 5-0 after just an inning and a half, but the Bluejays scored six straight runs to come away with the victory.

Trailing 5-0, the Bluejays struck for four runs in the bottom of the second, keyed by an RBI double from Katie Boals and a run-scoring single from Brianna Thompson.

Elmhurst evened the score in the third inning. Meg Griffin led off the frame with a triple and promptly scored on Tiffany Potthast's RBI single.

The Bluejays took advantage of a Geneseo error to pull in front in the fifth inning. Boals reached base on a two-out error and scored on Stephanie Hintz's RBI double.

SUNY-Geneseo threatened in the top of the seventh, putting the tying run on second with only one out, but Boals came on in relief of Potthast and ended the game with a double-play grounder.

Hintz paced the Elmhurst offense with a pair of hits while scoring a run and driving in one.

Potthast earned the win, improving to 2-1 on the season. She allowed five runs over 6.1 innings of work while scattering seven hits. She walked three and fanned five. Boals recorded her first save of the year, by recording the final two outs.

ELMHURST 5, D'YOUVILLE 4 - Elmhurst trailed 3-0 after four and half innings, but the Bluejays scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and three times in the bottom of the sixth to earn the win.

Trailing by three, the Bluejays jumped back into the game in the fifth. Lindsey Mikulecky led off the inning with a triple and scored on Bella Masini's RBI single. Clare Bukowski singled home Masini later in the inning to pull Elmhurst to within a run.

Mikulecky roped a one out triple to start the Bluejays' rally in the sixth. After Masini walked, a double steal evened the score as Mikulecky crossed the plate. Bukowski delivered the big blow in the inning, ripping a two-run double to give Elmhurst a 5-3 lead.

D'Youville added a run in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Bluejays.

Mikulecky and Bukowski finished with two hits apiece. Mikulecky and Masini scored a pair of runs while Bukowski drove in three.

Boals remained perfect on the season from the circle, upping her record to 3-0. She tossed a complete game while scattering six hits and four runs (just one earned). She walked one and struck out four.

Elmhurst takes on Oberlin and St. Catherine tomorrow (March 23).
