Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team opened its 12-game Florida road trip by splitting a pair of contests. The Bluejays opened with a 14-0 victory over Southern Maine before falling 4-2 to Fredonia State.
ELMHURST 14, SOUTHERN MAINE 0 - Elmhurst used a 13-run first inning to cruise to a 14-0 win over Southern Maine in the team's opening game on the Florida road trip.
The Bluejays jumped on the scoreboard quickly in the first inning, scoring on an error, a hit-by-pitch, and three straight bases loaded singles.
Bella Masini roped a bases-clearing, three-run triple and then
Katie Boals crushed a three-run homer to spark the Bluejays' 13-run outburst.
Clare Bukowski added a solo blast in the third inning to account for the Bluejays' final run.
Boals finished 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in four while Masini added two hits and three RBI.
Meg Griffin collected two hits, scored two runs and drove in a run while Bukowski scored three times. Breanna Thompson added two hits in the win for Elmhurst.
In addition to leading the Bluejays' with her bat, Boals also notched the win for Elmhurst. She worked five innings and recorded a shutout, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out seven.
FREDONIA STATE 4, ELMHURST 2 - The Bluejays suffered their first loss of the season, falling 4-2 to Fredonia State.
Elmhurst struck first in the fourth inning.
Tiffany Potthast roped a one-out double and then scored on Boals' RBI single.
Fredonia answered back in the fifth, scoring on a Cherise Grunnell double and taking the lead on an Elmhurst miscue. Fredonia went up 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a run on a wild pitch and another on a solo homer from Katie Bartowiak.
Potthast took the loss for the Bluejays, working six innings and allowing four runs (three earned). She walked two and struck out four while giving up seven hits.
Elmhurst takes on SUNY-Geneseo and D'Youville on Friday (March 22).
