Bluejays Hold Off Wartburg for 65-62 Win

Box Score WAVERLY, Iowa - The Elmhurst women's basketball team held off a second-half surge from Wartburg to defeat the Knights 65-62.

Elmhurst (8-2) opened the game on a 19-8 run over the first 9:20 to grab an 11-point lead. The Bluejays led by as many as 15 points in the half and carried a 37-26 lead into the locker room at the break.

Wartburg (5-3) answered back in the second half, outscoring Elmhurst 20-9 over the first 10 minutes to even the score at 46-46. Wartburg opened up a five-point cushion with 7:20 remaining.

Karen Senette took over for the Bluejays, scoring 12 of the Bluejays' final 14 points. A pair of three-pointers from Senette brought Elmhurst to within a point with 4:23 left to play. Fiona McMahon put the Bluejays on top with a jumper with 3:36 remaining.

Wartburg took a 60-59 lead with a pair of free throws from Alyssa Sager with 1:11 to go, but Senette hit a bucket with 46 seconds left to put Elmhurst up for good. Senette hit all four of her free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory for the Bluejays.

Elmhurst finished the contest shooting 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the floor, including 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from downtown. Senette led the way for Elmhurst with 16 points while Whitney Shaffer came off the bench to score 14, hitting four three-pointers in the win. McMahon added nine points and six rebounds while Melanie Schwerdtmann totaled six points and eight rebounds. Katie Swanson added eight points for the Bluejays.

Wartburg finished the game shooting 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the field, but the Knights struggled from three-point range and the foul line. Wartburg missed all 13 of its attempts from long distance and shot only 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the free throw line.

Sager paced Wartburg with 21 points and eight rebounds while Holly Hallstead finished with 11 points for the Knights.

Elmhurst hosts Loras College on Saturdaay, December 28.
