Box Score DECATUR, Ill. - After dropping the opening set, the 15th-ranked Elmhurst College volleyball team rallied past Millikin University to open CCIW play with a four-set victory.
The Bluejays snapped a three-game skid with the win, improving to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in CCIW competition.
The Bluejays had a slim lead late in the opening set, but six straight points from Millikin (7-2) gave the Big Blue the opening set.
After letting the opening set slip away, the Elmhurst offense started clicking in the second set as the Bluejays raced past Millikin 25-12 to even the match.
Elmhurst continued to step on the gas in the third set, racing out to a 13-2 lead and never looking back.
Millikin started strong in the fourth set, building a quick five-point advantage at 8-3. Elmhurst responded by winning the next 12 points to build a 15-8 lead, pulling away to take the set and the match.
Antonéya Veasy Smith led Elmhurst's attack with 13 kills.
Megan Reynolds added 12 kills and a team-leading five blocks while
Marci Novak turned in a nine-kill, 11-dig, two-block performance.
Sam Szarmach totaled eight kills for the Bluejays while
Perrie Morgan led the squad in digs with 13.
Katie Rueffer added a team-leading 21 assists while
Erin Thill finished with 14.
Elmhurst has a week off before continuing CCIW play next Tuesday (September 18) by travelling to 16th-ranked Carthage College.
