Softball Team Falls to Carthage in 10 Innings

Box Score BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst College softball team was eliminated from the CCIW Tournament after falling 5-3 in 10 innings to Carthage College.

Carthage (33-7) scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to score the victory and advance in the consolation round of the tournament.

The Lady Reds got on the scoreboard first as Vicki Pyan singled home Bryanna Heckel who reached on an error to lead off the third. Elmhurst answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Meg Griffin singled home Sarah Cademartori.

Lindsey Mikulecky smacked a solo homer to center field to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead after four innings.

Carthage jumped back out in front in the fifth on RBI singles from Katie Morman and Jen Precht.

Elmhurst evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Clare Bukowski led off the inning with a solo shot to left field.

The Bluejays had a chance to end the game in the seventh after Bella Masini was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Masini moved to second on Cademartori's sacrifice bunt, but back-to-back ground outs ended the Bluejays' scoring threat.

Corrine Sheley delivered a two-out, two-run single in the 10th to help the Lady Reds earn the win.

Stephanie Iori made the start and took a no decision for the Bluejays. She allowed six hits and two earned runs over five innings of work. She walked one and fanned three. Lindsay Nauman took the loss in relief. Nauman surrendered four hits and two runs in five innings. Nauman walked one and struck out five while falling to 11-8 on the season.

Krystina Leazer picked up the victory in relief for Carthage, improving to 24-4 overall. She allowed three hits and one run over six innings. She walked one and struck out six.

With the loss, the Bluejays close up the 2012 season with a 25-16 record, the most wins for Elmhurst under head coach Lori Brown. The 25 victories also equals the Bluejays' best-ever win total set by the 1992 squad.
