Bluejays Fall in CCIW Tournament Opener

Box Score BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst College softball team suffered a 4-2 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University in the opening round of the CCIW Tournament.

Elmhurst (25-15) outhit Illinois Wesleyan (34-6) 6-4 but the Titans took advantage of walks and an error by the Bluejays to come away with the 4-2 victory.

The Titans started the scoring in the opening inning. A single and walk put runners on first and second with two outs. Allie Riordan delivered a two-run single to stake the Titans to a 2-0 lead.

Elmhurst answered back with a  pair of runs in the second inning. Clare Bukowski reached base on a Titan error and took second on Julie Devine's single. Katie Boals delivered a two-out double to left field to drive in Bukowski and pinch runner Ele Walter.

The Bluejays threatened in the fourth after two singles and an IWU error loaded the bases with two outs. The Bluejays left the bases loaded and then stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the fifth.

Illinois Wesleyan went on top by scoring a pair of unearned runs in the fifth. Courtney Martin drew a one out walk and moved to second on Audra James' single. Keri Leach laid down a bunt attempt that was mishandled by Elmhurst allowing the Titans to load the bases with one out. After a pop out, Riordan delivered another clutch hit for the Titans, singling home two runs with two outs.

Riordan recorded two of the Titans' four hits and drove in all four runs for IWU.

Lindsay Nauman took the loss for Elmhurst, surrendering four hits and four runs (two earned) in six innings of work. She walked four and fanned three while dropping to 11-7 on the season.

Millikin defeated Carthage 5-3 in 10 innings in the first game. Elmhurst will take on Carthage in an elimination game.

SCHEDULE NOTE: Due to field conditions at Illinois State, the remaining two games on Friday will be played at Illinois Wesleyan under the lights. Elmhurst will face Carthage at 6:00 pm while Illinois Wesleyan takes on Millikin at 8:00 p.m.

Saturday's first two games will begin 30 minutes later than originally scheduled. Game five will start at 9:30 am and game six will begin at 11:30 am.
