Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College softball team moved to 5-5 in CCIW play after splitting a doubleheader against Millikin University. After dropping game one 4-0, the Bluejays bounced back to take game two 6-3.
MILLIKIN 4, ELMHURST 0 (Game One) - Millikin scored a run in the fourth and tacked on three runs in the seventh to win the opening contest 4-0.
Millikin took advantage of an Elmhurst error to score the game's first run in the fourth inning. With two out and a runner at first, the Big Blue's inning was extended after the Bluejays mishandled a ground ball. Millikin's Jenna Anderson followed with a single back up the middle to put Millikin on top 1-0.
Millikin sealed the game in the seventh inning by tacking on three insurance runs. The Big Blue used a walk and four consecutive two-out singles to plate three runs and pull away for the 4-0 win.
Elmhurst had scoring chances in the third and fifth innings. The Bluejays loaded the bases with only one out in the third, but back-to-back ground balls ended the scoring threat. In the fifth, the Bluejays had runners at first and second with two outs, but Millikin's Cora Jeffers made a leaping catch on
Meg Griffin's line drive to deep center field.
Stephanie Iori took the loss for the Bluejays, slipping to 9-6 in the process. Iori surrendered 12 hits, two walks, and four runs (three earned) while tossing a full seven innings. She stuck out six Big Blue batters in the loss.
Millikin's Lauren Kitterman picked up the win, improving to 11-5 on the year. Kitterman allowed just five hits and three walks while pitching the shutout. She fanned four in the win.
ELMHURST 6, MILLIKIN 3 (Game Two) - Elmhurst rebouded from the game one loss with a 6-2 win in game two, evening its CCIW record at 5-5 in the process.
Elmhurst raced out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Bluejays plated two runs in the first and added a pair in the third.
A Millikin error started the scoring for Elmhurst in the first.
Clare Bukowski added an RBI single in the first for the Bluejays.
Julie Devine hit a sacrifice fly and the Bluejays took advantage of another Big Blue error in the third to go up 4-0.
Millikin used a bases loaded walk in the third to get on the scoreboard and cut Elmhurst's lead down to three.
The Bluejays responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. Griffin ripped an RBI double down the left field line and later scored on
Lindsey Mikulecky's run-scoring single.
The Big Blue forced home another run on a bases loaded walk in the sixth inning to make the score 6-2.
Millikin loaded the bases in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but the Big Blue managed just one run as Elmhurst came away with the 6-3 win.
Millikin had scoring chances throughout the game, but the Big Blue stranded 15 runners and left the bases loaded three times.
Griffin led Elmhurst's offense, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI.
Lindsay Nauman improved to 9-6 on the season by picking up the win. Nauman scattered five hits and three unearned runs in 6.1 innings of work.
Tiffany Potthast retired the last two batters to record her first save of the season.
Elmhurst hosts Wheaton College on Wednesday, April 25.
