Box Score 2 KENOSHA, Wis. - Lindsay Nauman tossed a complete game shutout in the opening game of a doubleheader, helping the Elmhurst softball team to earn a split at Carthage College. The Bluejays won the opener behind Nauman's pitching performance, but Carthage scored seven unanswered runs to take game two 7-4.
ELMHURST 3, CARTHAGE 0 - Lindsay Nauman tossed a complete game shutout while pitching the Bluejays to a 3-0 win over Carthage.
Elmhurst took advantage of a Carthage mistake in the second to take a quick lead.
Tiffany Potthast singled to lead off the inning and then advanced to third on back-to-back ground outs. Potthast scored on a Carthage passed ball to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays tacked on two runs in the fifth to go up 3-0.
Lindsey Mikulecky led off the inning with a walk and came home to score on
Sarah Cademartori's one-out double.
Rose Wysocki delivered a two-out single to drive home Cademartori and give the Bluejays a three-run cushion.
Nauman sailed through the contest, never allowing a Carthage runner past second base. Nauman allowed just three hits and two walks over seven innings. She fanned six batters while upping her record to 8-6 on the season.
Elmhurst handed Carthage ace Krystina Leazer just her second loss of the season. Leazer surrendered seven hits, three runs (two earned), and one walk in seven innings. She struck out eight while dropping to 18-2 overall.
CARTHAGE 7, ELMHURST 4 - Elmhurst jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, but Carthage (28-4, 8-2 CCIW) rallied for seven unanswered runs to take game two 7-4.
Back-to-back RBI doubles from
Clare Bukowski and Potthast in the second gave the Bluejays a 2-0 lead in the second. An RBI double from Bukowski and a run-scoring single from Potthast in the third put Elmhurst on top 4-0.
An Elmhurst error opened the door for three Carthage runs in the fourth inning. The Lady Reds went on top for good in the fifth inning when Vicki Pyan and Alyssa Schrader led off the frame with consecutive solo homers. Carthage tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to put the game away.
Bukowski and Potthast finished with two hits and two RBI apiece.
Stephanie Iori dropped to 9-5 after taking the loss for Elmhurst. Iori surrendered 10 hits and seven runs (four earned) in six innings of work. She walked four and struck out five in the loss.
Elmhurst continues CCIW play tomorrow (April 22) by hosting Millikin University at 1:00 p.m.
