Softball Team Suffers Setback Against North Park

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team slipped to 3-3 in CCIW play after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to North Park University. The Bluejays fell 10-6 in game one and dropped game two by a 7-5 final score.

NORTH PARK 10, ELMHURST 6 - North Park (19-11, 2-4 CCIW) picked up its first CCIW win of the season by upending Elmhurst (19-10) 10-6 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Vikings jumped on the scoreboard 2-0 in the opening frame. A walk and a hit batter came back to haunt the Bluejays as Katie Anderson drove in both runners with a two-run triple down the right field line.

Elmhurst got even in the second inning without recording a hit. North Park pitcher Courtney Lucht walked five batters including three straight with two outs to force in  a pair of runs.

North Park plated a run in the third and scored two in the fourth to open up a 5-2 lead. Elmhurst's bats were silent for the first four innings as the Bluejays went without a hit until the fifth. With two down in the fifth, Bella Masini struck out on a pitch in the dirt but beat the throw down to first to keep the inning alive. Tiffany Potthast followed with the Bluejays' first hit of the day to move Masini to second. Meg Griffin roped a double of the left field wall to drive in Masini and bring the Bluejays to within two runs. Elmhurst loaded the bases, but Clare Bukowski flied out to end the scoring threat.

The Bluejays loaded the bases for a third time in the sixth inning, but once again came up empty handed. Elmhurst stranded nine runners through the opening six innings.

North Park took advantage of an Elmhurst error in the seventh to score four runs and open up a 10-3 advantage. Elmhurst scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 10-6.

Elmhurst finished with only six hits in the contest, including two by Lindsey Mikulecky. Mikulecky also drove in two runs for the Bluejays.

Lindsay Nauman took the loss and dropped to 7-6 in the process. Nauman surrendered 10 hits and eight runs (six earned) in 6.1 innings of work. She walked three and fanned seven.

NORTH PARK 7, ELMHURST 5 - A five-run third inning allowed the Vikings to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 7-5 win in game two.

Elmhurst jumped on the scoreboard first on Griffin's RBI single in the first inning.

North Park scored an unearned run in the second to knot the score at 1-1.

The Vikings broke the game open in the third inning. The Vikings batted around and score five times. Ana Pistilli and Megan Bura each delivered key two-run singles for the Vikings.

The Bluejays scored a run in the fourth to pull to within four runs. Clare Bukowski blasted a two-run homer to center field in the fifth and a North Park error made the score 6-4 in favor of the Vikings.

North Park tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning to earn the 7-5 victory.

Sarah Cademartori, Julie Devine and Griffin collected two hits apiece in the loss for Elmhurst.

Stephanie Iori took the loss, dropping to 9-4 in the process. Iori allowed nine hits, two walks, and seven runs (six earned) in six innings pitched. She also struck out four.

Elmhurst travels to Carthage College on Saturday (April 21).
