Box Score 2 ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Stephanie Iori pitched a shutout and became the Bluejays' all-time leader in strikeouts while helping the Elmhurst softball team split a doubleheader at Augustana College.
Elmhurst (19-8, 3-1 CCIW) dropped the opening contest 4-1, but the Bluejays bounced back behind Iori's shutout to blank Augustana (19-7, 4-2 CCIW) 6-0 in game two.
AUGUSTANA 4, ELMHURST 1 (Game One) - Augustana's Sarah Hintz shut down the Bluejays' offense while helping the Vikings earn a 4-1 victory in game one.
Hintz tossed a complete game allowing only four hits and one unearned run while improving to 12-2 on the season.
The Vikings jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning after back-to-back bases loaded walks forced in two runs. Augustana added a run in third to open up a three-run cushion.
The Bluejays pulled to within two runs in the top of the sixth after
Bella Masini reached on an error and scored on
Meg Griffin's RBI single. The Vikings came right back with a run in the bottom half of the inning to pull away for the three-run victory.
Griffin collected two of the Bluejays' four hits in the loss.
Lindsay Nauman took the loss for Elmhurst in game one. Nauman surrendered seven hits, five walks and four runs in five innings of work. She fanned two while falling to 7-5 on the season.
ELMHURST 6, AUGUSTANA 0 (Game Two) - Iori shut down the Viking's bats while improving to 9-2 on the season and setting an Elmhurst career record in the process.
Iori allowed just four hits and two walks while tossing a complete-game shutout. She struck out six Vikings in the contest, becoming Elmhurst's career record holder for strikeouts with 256. She surpassed the previous mark of 254 set by Katie Gervase in 2005.
The Bluejays grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Clare Bukowski led off the frame with a double and came around to score on
Katie Boals' two-out single.
Elmhurst broke the game open in the fourth inning by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four times. Masini singled home a run to start the scoring and
Tiffany Potthast followed with an RBI single. Bases loaded walks to
Rose Wysocki and
Julie Devine forced in runs to give Elmhurst a 5-0 advantage.
Masini added an insurance run in the fifth inning with a run-scoring single.
Masini, Bukowski, and Griffin collected two hits apiece in the Elmhurst victory. Masini drove in two runs and also scored a run for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst continues CCIW play on Tuesday (April 17) by hosting North Park University in a doubleheader.
