Box Score WHEATON, Ill. - Late turnovers proved costly as the Elmhurst College women's basketball team suffered a 63-62 overtime loss at Wheaton College.
Elmhurst (16-5, 7-3) rallied from a nine-point first-half deficit to build a six-point lead in the second half. The Bluejays led by two with less than two minutes to play, but free throws from Laura Karsten and Brooke Olson gave the Thunder a 55-53 advantage with 44 seconds left on the clock. Elmhurst's
Devin Vaughn knocked down a jumper in the paint to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the Bluejays built a four-point lead on four straight
Megan Ney free throws. The Bluejays led by three after a pair of
Jordan Maisto free throws with 2:24 left. Elmhurst had a chance to pad its advantage following a Wheaton turnover, but the Bluejays threw the ball away leading to a lay-up for Olson. An Elmhurst turnover with less than a minute to play led to another Olson lay-up and gave the Thunder their first lead in overtime.
The Bluejays turned the ball over with 35 seconds to play for a third straight possession, but Wheaton missed the front end of a one-and-one, and the Bluejays grabbed the rebound. Elmhurst had a chance to get the win as time ticked away but
Tess Godhardt's jumper was no good, and Ney's put back jumper with two seconds left bounced out. The Thunder secured the rebound with less than a second to play to preserve the win.
Elmhurst finished the game shooting 47.8 percent (20-of-46) from the floor, but the Bluejays were held to without a field goal (0-2) in overtime. Elmhurst was solid from the foul line, hitting 87.5 percent (20-of-26) from the charity stripe.
Turnovers plagued Elmhurst all gone long. The Bluejays gave the ball away 23 times leading to 26 points for Wheaton. The Bluejays did win the rebounding battle, pulling down 43 rebounds to Wheaton's 29.
Four Bluejays reached double figures in scoring.
Meghan Merklein paced the Bluejays with a double-double, totaling 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ney added 15 points and eight rebounds. Godhardt and
Fiona McMahon scored 10 points apiece for the Bluejays.
Wheaton ended the game shooting only 35.9 percent (23-of-64), including just 25.0 percent (5-of-20) from beyond the arc.
Karsten led the Thunder with 20 points and seven steals while Olson scored 19.
With the loss, the Bluejays dropped into third-place tie with Wheaton in the CCIW standings. Both teams remain two games in front of Millikin University for the final spot in the CCIW Tournament with four games remaining.
Elmhurst hosts Millikin on Wednesday, February 8.
