Bluejay Softball Team Splits Opening Contests

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DAVENPORT, Iowa - The Elmhurst softball team opened the 2012 season by splitting a pair of contests at the St. Ambrose University Tournament. The Bluejays opened the year with a 9-8 loss to Ashford University before blanking St. Ambrose 3-0.

ASHFORD 9, ELMHURST 8 - The Bluejays dropped their opening game 9-8 Ashford. Elmhurst raced out to a 7-2 lead, cashing in on seven Ashford errors to build a five-run cushion.

Things fell apart for the Bluejays in the bottom of the third when Ashford plated six runs, taking advantage of two Elmhurst errors to extend the inning.

Elmhurst rallied in the top of the seventh to tie the score on a two-out RBI single from Tiffany Potthast, but Ashford scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the walk-off victory.

Lindsay Nauman suffered the loss for the Bluejays despite allowing just four earned runs. Nauman allowed 10 hits while walking three and fanning five. The Bluejays committed four errors resulting in five unearned runs for Ashford.

Meg Griffin made her collegiate debut in the outfield and led Elmhurst's offense with three hits and three runs scored. Potthast and Clare Bukowski both finished 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Rose Wysocki also drove in a run for the Bluejays.

ELMHURST 3, ST. AMBROSE 0 - The Bluejays evened their record at 1-1 after shutting out the tournament's host.

Elmhurst scored a run in the third, fifth and seventh innings to score the 3-0 victory. Sarah Cademartori drove in the game's first run in the third with an RBI single. Cademartori added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to put Elmhurst on top 2-0. Potthast accounted for Elmhurst's final run of the day by tripling home Lindsey Mikulecky in the seventh.
 
Stephanie Iori picked up the victory for Elmhurst, tossing a complete game while scattering four hits and two walks over seven innings. Iori fanned four in the victory.
