Box Score 2 HOLLAND, Mich. - The Elmhurst volleyball team moved to 20-7 after splitting a pair of matches on the second day of the Hope College Tournament.
Ranked ninth in the latest AVCA poll, the Bluejays opened the day with a five-set loss to the sixth-ranked tournament host. Elmhurst closed out the tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran College.
HOPE 3, ELMHURST 2 - Elmhurst suffered a 32-30, 12-25, 23-25, 25-23, 10-15 loss to the sixth-ranked Flying Dutch.
The first set was a slugfest as eachteam fought off set points until the Bluejays finally scored a 32-20 win. Hope dominated the second set, cruising past the Bluejays with a 13-point win to even the match.
In the third set, Hope built a four-point lead at 16-12, but the Bluejays responded with a 9-3 run to open up a 21-19 lead. Elmhurst led 23-22, but Hope rattled off three straight points to take the second set.
The Bluejays built a 20-17 lead in the fourth set and held off a late charge from the Flying Dutch to even the match at 2-2.
Hope (21-2) won the first six points in the fifth set to take a commanding lead. The Bluejays pulled to within two points at 7-5 and again at 12-10, but Hope won the last three points to put the match away.
Four Bluejays reached double figures in kills. Elmhurst's middle hitter combination of
Megan Reynolds and
Kaitlyn Wilks combined for 28 kills and 15 blocks. Reynolds totaled 14 kills and a match-high nine blocks while Wilks finished with an identical 14 kills to go
with six blocks.
Marci Novak totaled 11 kills, 23 digs and five blocks while Antonéya Veasy Smith added 11 kills.
Sam Szarmach finished with seven kills and 17 digs.
Hannah Lessen led the Bluejays in digs with 28.
Erin Thill totaled 34 assists while
Katie Rueffer finished with 18.
Hope was led by Jenna Grasmeyer' 28 kills and 13 digs. Grasmeyer swung 68 times in the match.
ELMHURST 3, WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 0 - The Bluejays bounced back from the loss to Hope with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-17 win over Wisconsin Lutheran.
Reynolds led he charge for Elmhurst with 10 kills and seven blocks. Novak added nine kills and 18 digs while Szarmach finished with eight kills. Lessen totaled a team-leading5 digs while Thill led the squad in assists with 26.
Elmhurst can secure at least a share of the CCIW title on Wednesday when the Bluejays travel to Illinois Wesleyan University.
