Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Elmhurst volleyball team had its 10-match winning streak snapped after its rally came up short in five-set loss at 17th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Elmhurst, ranked ninth in the latest AVCA poll, fell to 18-5 with the 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-19, 13-15 loss.
Wisconsin-Whitewater (17-7) started strong, taking the opening two sets to go up 2-0. In the opening set, the Warhawks opened a quick five-point advantage, but Elmhurst responded with a run to knot the score at 14-14. The Warhawks opened up a 22-18 lead and held off the Bluejays to take the opening set.
Elmhurst struggled at the start of the second set as the Warhawks used a 10-0 run to open up a 13-3 lead. The Bluejays managed to pull to within three points at 15-12, but UW-Whitewater pulled away to open up a 2-0 lead.
Trailing 14-13 in the third set, Elmhurst won seven of the next eight points to grab a 20-15 lead. Elmhurst held off the Warhawks to take the third set 25-21.
Elmhurst fell behind 11-8 in the fourth set, but the Bluejays used a 7-1 run to open up a 15-12 advantage. The Warhawks pulled to within a point at 19-18, but the Bluejays ripped of a 6-1 run to close out the set and even the match.
In the fifth and decisive set, the Bluejays raced out to a 4-0 lead, but the Warhawks chipped away and used a 4-0 run when trailing 9-7 to seize control with an 11-9 lead. UW-Whitewater pulled away to a 14-11 lead. Elmhurst managed to fight off a pair of match points, but the Warhawks' Leanna Lillge fought through a block to put the match away at 15-13.
Marci Novak led Elmhurst in the loss, totaling a team-leading 14 kills while adding 14 digs, three blocks and two aces. Antonéya Veasy Smith added nine kills while
Sam Szarmach and
Kaitlyn Wilks finished with eight kills apiece.
Megan Reynolds added six kills and seven blocks in the loss.
Erin Thill totaled a team-leading 38 assists while
Hannah Lessen led the squad in digs with 26.
Four Warhawks reached double figures in kills with Lillge totaling 17. Kristen Ruchti added 13 kills while Brittney Langley and Caroline Langer finished with 11 kills each.
Elmhurst travels to the Hope College Tournament this weekend.
