ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College softball team moved to 6-10 overall after splitting their home-opening doubleheader with Aurora University. The Bluejays took game one 7-6 before dropping the night cap 8-0.
ELMHURST 7, AURORA 6 - Gina Venier squeezed home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Bluejays to a 7-6 victory over the Spartans.
Aurora jumped out to a 2-0 lead by scoring a run in the first and adding a run in the third. Elmhurst rallied for six runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead. After a leadoff single by
Amanda Bowlin, Lindsay Mikulecky belted a two-run homer to center. The Bluejays loaded the bases with one out and
Sarah Cademartori forced in a run when she was hit by a pitch
Gina Venier followed with a run-scoring single and Bowlin added a two-run single to stake the Bluejays to a four-run cushion.
Aurora rallied for two runs in the fourth and then tied the score at six by scoring a pair in the top of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Rachel Cooke led off with a single. Pinch runner
Rachel Hartman moved to second on
Erika Schwartz's bunt single. Cademartori put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, and Venier squeezed home Hartman to give the Bluejays the walk-off win.
Mikulecky and Bukowski banged out three hits apiece for the Bluejays. Venier, Bowlin and Mikulecky all drove in two.
Stephanie Iori earned the win for the Bluejays, working all seven innings and surrendering 10 hits and four earned runs. She walked two and struck out four while improving to 4-5 on the season.
AURORA 8, ELMHURST 0 - Aurora totaled 10 hits while scoring an 8-0 victory in six innings. The Spartans scored four times in the second inning and tacked on two runs in both the fifth and sixth frames. Tristan Wilcox delivered the big blow for the Spartans in the second by smashing a three-run homer to center field.
Elmhurst managed just five hits off of Spartans' starter Allison Shimkus. Bowlin collected two of the Bluejays' hits in the loss.
Lindsay Nauman dropped to 2-5 overall with the loss. Nauman allowed 10 hits and eight runs. She walked five and fanned five in the loss.
Elmhurst travels to Millikin University on Saturday, March 2.
