Softball Team Splits Pair of Games in Florida

The Elmhurst College softball team opened the 2011 season by splitting a pair of contests at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

The Bluejays opened the year by defeating Hamline 10-6 before dropping a 10-3 decision to Renselaer Polytechnic Institute.

ELMHURST 10, HAMLINE 6 -
Elmhurst erased a two-run deficit by scoring six runs over the final three innings of play to defeat Hamline University 10-6.

Hamline (0-1) jumped on the Bluejays' defensive mistakes in the opening innings. Hamline used Elmhurst errors in the first and third inning to score five unearned runs while jumping out to a 6-4 lead. The Bluejays trimmed the lead down to just one in the fifth inning after Rose Wysocki drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Elmhurst grabbed the lead on a Lindsey Mikulecky run-scoring single in the sixth inning and Katie Hruby tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single.

Amanda Bowlin finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored an RBI. Wysocki and Clare Bukowski each drove in a pair of runs while Sarah Cademartori collected a pair o hits and scored twice.

Stephanie Iori earned the victory for the Bluejays. Iori tossed a complete game, scattering 10 hits and allowing just one walk. She struck out and allowed just one earned run.

RPI 10, ELMHURST 3 - Elmhurst dropped to 1-1 on the season following a 10-3 loss to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). 

RPI (7-4) did the majority of its damage in the opening inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Three of RPI's runs were unearned due to an Elmhurst error.

The Bluejays scored a run in the first on a Bowlin sacrifice fly and added a run in the fifth on a run-scoring grounder from Hruby. Rachel Hartman tripled in the Bluejays' final run in the sixth inning. 

Lindsay Nauman took the loss for the Bluejays, working 5.1 innings and allowing eight hits and six earned runs. She struck out three while walking eight. 

Elmhurst takes on Bates College and Bowdoin College on Saturday, March 19.
