ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College volleyball team won its 16th straight match and qualified for the CCIW Tournament with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-18 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University.
Trailing 11-8 in the opening set, Elmhurst responded by winning 10 of the next 12 points to take an 18-13 lead before cruising to the seven-point win. The Bluejays seemed in control in the second set, leading 23-17, but the Titans ripped off six straight points to knot the score at 23-23. The Bluejays responded with back-to-back points to close out the set at 25-23. Elmhurst quickly surged in front in the third set and never looked back, polishing off the Titans 25-18.
Sam Szarmach pounded down a team-leading eight kills to pace the Bluejays in the victory. Antoneya Veasy Smith added seven kills and four blocks while
Megan Reynolds totaled seven kills and three blocks.
Taylor Rasmussen chipped in with six kills and
Kaitlyn Wilks added five kills and six blocks.
Erin Thill and
Katie Rueffer combined for 32 assists with Thill finishing with 19 and Rueffer totaling 13.
Perrie Morgan led the squad in digs with 13.
The top four seeds all advanced to the semifinals of the CCIW Tournament. Top-seeded Carthage College will host the tournament. Elmhurst, seeded third, will face second-seeded Millikin University on Friday (November 4) at 4:30 p.m. Carthage will face fourth-seeded Wheaton College at 7:00 p.m. The Tournament finals will be on Saturday (November 5) at 2:00 p.m.
