ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Kim Schwerdtmann scored a career-high 19 points, including 10 in overtime, to lift the Elmhurst College women's basketball team to a 65-62 overtime victory at Augustana College.
Elmhurst (6-7, 1-1 CCIW) watched a 17-point second-half lead evaporate and needed a game-tying three-pointer from
Meghan Merklein at the buzzer to send the game into bonus time.
The Bluejays led 31-18 at halftime and built a 37-20 advantage early in the second half. Augustana (4-9, 0-2 CCIW) trimmed the lead down to just 11 points (43-32) with 10:30 remaining and then used an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to grab a 44-43 lead. The Vikings built a three-point advantage with three minutes to play, but a bucket and two free throws from Merklein put Elmhurst on top 49-48 with 1:40 left on the clock.
Whitney Miller converted a three-point play to put Augustana back on top. After an Elmhurst miss, the Vikings' Natalie Runge split a pair of free throws to give Augustana a 52-49 lead. Merklein connected on the game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Bluejays a second-chance.
In overtime, Schwerdtmann took over for the Bluejays, scoring Elmhurst's first six points. The Bluejays still trailed by three with two minutes to play when
Kelsey Monroe knocked down a game-tying three-pointer. After an Augustana miss, Schwerdtmann hit her third bucket of overtime, putting the Bluejays up with less than a minute to play. Following an Augustana turnover, Schwerdtmann hit a pair of free throws to help seal the win for Elmhurst.
The Bluejays finished the game shooting 52.0 percent (26-of-50) from the floor, including 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from beyond the arc. Elmhurst was solid from the foul line, hitting 9-of-10 free throw attempts.
Four players reached double figures in scoring for Elmhurst. Schwerdtmann poured in 19 points to lead the Bluejays in the victory, finishing the game shooting 7-of-14 from the floor. Monroe added 12 points while Merklein finished with 10.
Megan Ney pitched in with 10 points and a team-leading nine rebounds.
Augustana shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the field, including 40.0 percent (4-of-10) from downtown. Kristen Fox connected on 9-of-18 shots to finish with a game-high 22 points for the Vikings. Runge added 13 points and Miller totaled 12 in the loss.
The Bluejays will attempt to win their second-straight game for the first time this season by hosting Carthage College on Tuesday, January 11.
