Bluejay Softball Team Swept by Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst College softball team's chances of qualifying for the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament suffered a blow after the Bluejays were swept in a doubleheader by Carthage College.

Carthage (19-8, 9-3 CCIW) edged Elmhurst 2-1 in game one, and the Lady Reds finished the sweep with a 3-1 victory in game two.

CARTHAGE 2, ELMHURST 1 (Game One) -
Carthage broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to score a 2-1 victory.

The Lady Reds scored a run in the third to take a 1-0 lead, but Elmhurst tied the game in the top of the sixth. Becca Zumpf led off the frame with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored the tying run on an Amanda Bowlin sacrifice fly.

The Bluejays were limited to just five base runners and only three hits in the loss. 

Stephanie Iori took the loss for the Bluejays despite surrendering just one earned run. She allowed eight hits and struck out four. 

CARTHAGE 3, ELMHURST 1 (Game Two) - Carthage broke a scoreless tie with a two-run Jacquelyn Tassone home run in the top of the sixth to score a 3-1 victory over Elmhurst in game two.

The Lady Reds added a run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-0 lead. Elmhurst cut into the lead with a Zumpf RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bluejays could come no closer.

Elmhurst threatened early in the game, loading the bases with only one out in the bottom of the first inning, but the Bluejays were unable to drive home a run.

Iori took her second loss of the day, dropping to 13-8 on the season. She allowed two runs and eight hits in 5.2 innings of work. She walked one and struck out one in the loss. 

The Bluejays will have to wait until the final CCIW games of the regular season are played to see if they qualify for the CCIW Tournament. The top four teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the CCIW Tournament.

Elmhurst hosts Dominican University on Thursday, April 29.
