ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst College softball team upped its record to 20-12 overall and 7-5 in the CCIW after splitting a doubleheader at Augustana College.
Elmhurst rallied for a 9-4 victory in game one, but Augustana (25-10, 5-5 CCIW) earned the doubleheader split by taking game two 8-1.
ELMHURST 9, AUGUSTANA 4 (Game One) - Elmhurst scored six runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 9-4 victory over Augustana.
The Bluejays jumped out to a 3-0 lead by scoring three times in the second inning.
Michele Fournier put the Bluejays on the scoreboard when she squeezed home a run on a bunt.
Gina Venier added an RBI ground out, and Fournier came home to score on a wild pitch to put Elmhurst up 3-0.
Augustana got on the scoreboard with a a pair of runs in the fourth inning to cut the Bluejays' lead down to one. A Melissa Nelson two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth gave Augustana a 4-3 lead.
The Bluejays rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh to earn the victory. An Augustana error allowed Elmhurst to put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with one out.
Jill Karsa singled home both runs to put Elmhurst in front 5-4. The Bluejays proceeded to load the bases and
Amanda Bowlin sealed the game for Elmhurst by plating a grand slam to give Elmhurst the 9-4 win.
Bowlin and Fournier recorded two hits apiece for the Bluejays.
Stephanie Iori scored the win for the Bluejays and improved to 12-5 on the season. Iori worked all seven innings and scattered eight hits and four runs. She fanned six while not issuing a walk, and set a new Elmhurst's single-season strikeout record with 88.
AUGUSTANA 8, ELMHURST 1 (Game Two) - The Vikings earned the split by hammering Elmhurst 8-1 in game two.
Augustana used the long-ball to leap out to a six-run lead. The Vikings scored three run on a Nelson three-run homer in the first to take a 3-0 lead.
Bowlin drove in Elmhurst's only run in the bottom of the first.
The Vikings added a pair of homers in the second to take a 6-1 lead. Augustana added a run in the fifth, and a run in the sixth to score the 8-1 win.
Iori took the loss for the Bluejays, working 1.1 innings and allowing four hits and six runs (three earned).
Elmhurst travels to Carthage College on Monday, April 26.
