Bluejay Softball Team Takes Two at Florida Tournament

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst College softball team upped its record to 8-4 overall after winning a pair of one-run contests at the NTC Tournament in Clermont, Fla.

The Bluejays edged Grove City College 1-0 in their opening game of the day. Elmhurst finished the day with a 3-2 victory over Buffalo State College. The Bluejays improved to 5-1 at the tournament with the wins.

ELMHURST 1, GROVE CITY 0 - Julie Devine broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out, walk-off single to lift Elmhurst to a 1-0 victory over Grove City College.

Neither team was able to score a run in the opening six innings. Grove City stranded nine runners in the contest while Elmhurst left 10 runners on base. Grove City's best scoring chance came in the fourth inning when the Wolverines loaded the bases with just one out.Lindsay Nauman induced Faith Piper to hit into an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play to end the scoring threat.

Elmhurst pushed home the game's lone run in the bottom of the seventh. Jill Karsa led off the inning with a pinch-hit single. Gina Venier entered the game to run for Karsa and moved to third on Sarah Cademartori's single. The Bluejays attempted to squeeze home the winning run, but Venier was thrown out at the plate for the second out. With two outs and runners at first and second, Devine delivered a smash up the middle to drive home Cademartori and give the Bluejays the victory.

Nauman improved to 4-1 on the season while earning the victory. The sophomore pitcher scattered six hits and two walks while throwing the complete game shutout. Nauman fanned four in the victory. 

ELMHURST 3, BUFFALO STATE 2 - Elmhurst improved to 8-4 on the season by edging Buffalo State College 3-2. 

Trailing 1-0 after three innings, Elmhurst took advantage of a Buffalo State miscue to score three runs in the fourth. Rose Wysocki led off the fourth with a double and moved to second third on a Maureen Roderick single. Venier followed with a run-scoring single to tie the score at 1-1. After Venier stole second, Amanda Bowlin grounded back to pitcher Nikki Rieman. After attempting to freeze the lead baserunners, Rieman threw the ball away at first allowing Roderick and Venier to score and give Elmhurst a 3-1 lead. 

Venier and Wysocki recorded three hits apiece for the Bluejays in the victory.

Stephanie Iori (4-3) notched the win for the Bluejays by pitching a complete game. Iori scattered four hits and one walk over seven innings of work. She allowed just one earned run while striking out six.

The Bluejays have a day off before resuming play on Monday, March 29.
