CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst College softball team improved to 6-4 overall after splitting a pair of one-run games at the NTC Tournament in Clermont, Fla.
Elmhurst dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of Chicago to open the day, but the Bluejays rallied from a two-run deficit to defeat Lawrence University 5-4.
CHICAGO 2, ELMHURST 1 - Elmhurst led 1-0 after four innings, but Chicago scored a run in the fifth to tie the game and the Maroons pushed home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to score the 2-1 victory.
Becca Zumpf lifted a sacrifice fly to drive home the Bluejays' only run in the third inning. Chicago tacked on both of its runs after starting the inning with two outs and the bases empty. A run-scoring single followed a two-out walk and hit batter to tie the score at one in the fifth inning. Three consecutive singles with two outs in the sixth gave the Maroons the victory.
Zumpf recorded two of the Bluejays' five hits in the Elmhurst loss.
Stephanie Iori dropped to 2-3 on the season after taking the loss. Iori worked 5.2 innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs. She walked three while striking out one.
ELMHURST 5, LAWRENCE 4 - Elmhurst scored three runs in the top of the seventh to rally from a two-run deficit and earn a 5-4 win over Lawrence.
The Bluejays started the scoring in the top of the first by taking advantage of a Lawrence error to open up an early 2-0 lead.
Lawrence took the lead with the three runs in the fourth and then added a run in the sixth to take a 4-2 advantage.
Elmhurst recaptured the lead in the top of the seventh by scoring three times. With one out and
Sarah Cademartori at first base,
Jill Karsa singled to move Cademartori to second.
Julie Devine followed with a run scoring double to cut the Vikings' lead down to one.
Rose Wysocki smashed a two-run double to put Elmhurst on top 5-4.
Zumpf and Devine recorded two hits apiece for the Bluejays. Devine and Wysocki each drove in two runs in the victory.
Lindsay Nauman made the start for the Bluejays and earned a no-decision. Nauman scattered six hits and four walks in 5.2 innings of work. She fanned eight Vikings while not allowing an earned run (four unearned runs). Iori finished up in relief to earn the victory and improve to 3-3 on the season. Iori worked the final 1.1 innings, retiring all four batters she faced.
