Elmhurst Softball Team Splits Pair to Open Season

MIDDLETON, Wis. - The Elmhurst College softball team opened the 2010 season by splitting a pair of games against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at the Hitters Sportsplex. 

Elmhurst (1-1) dropped the opening game of the doubleheader 4-3, but bounced back to pound UW-Platteville 13-1 in game two.

UW-PLATTEVILLE 4, ELMHURST 3 (Game One) - Elmhurst erased an early 3-0 deficit but fell 4-3 to open the 2010 season.

The Bluejays trailed 3-0 after four innings, but scored a run in the fifth on a Jill Karsa RBI ground-out. Elmhurst evened the score in the sixth innings on RBIs from Maureen Roderick and Amanda Bowlin.

Back-to-back doubles from Jordan Johnson and Whitney Foltz to open the bottom of the sixth gave UW-Platteville the game-winning run.

Becca Zumpf and Bowlin recorded two hits apiece for Elmhurst in the loss.

Stephanie Iori took the loss for Elmhurst. She scattered seven hits and allowed just two earned runs over seven innings. She walked three and fanned five.

Melissa Anderson earned the win for the Pioneers, working a complete game and allowing just five hits and a pair of earned runs. She walked one while striking out four. 

ELMHURST 13, UW-PLATTEVILLE 1 (Game Two) - The Bluejays bounced back from their loss in game one to hammer the Pioneers 13-1. 

The Bluejays battered three UW-Platteville pitchers for 15 hits and 13 runs to score the win. Elmhurst broke open a 4-1 lead with a nine-run outburst in the top of the sixth.

Zumpf had a strong day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a team-leading four RBI. She smacked a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Rose Wysocki collected three hits and drove in a pair while Roderick homered and drove in three runs. Bowlin, Karsa, and Michele Fournier all recorded two hits apiece for the Bluejays.

Lindsay Nauman earned the win from the circle for the Bluejays. Nauman tossed six innings and scattered six hits and allowed just one unearned run. She walked two and fanned five.

Elmhurst will return to action in a little more than a month when the Bluejays travel to Benedictine University on March 18.
