ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Elmhurst Invitational. The Bluejays fell to Mount St. Joseph College in the first match of the day, but rebounded to topple the University of Chicago in five sets to end the tournament.
Elmhurst moved to 1-3 overall with the split.
MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 3, ELMHURST 2 - Mount St. Joseph erased a two set deficit to score a 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-10 come-from-behind victory over Elmhurst.
The Bluejays stormed out to a quick 2-0 lead, and had built a commanding 19-11 lead in the third set. Mt. St. Joseph rallied and closed out the third set on a 14-1 run to score the victory. The Thunder won the fourth set 25-20 and completed the comeback with a 15-10 win in the fifth and final set.
Caitlin O'Hara led Elmhurst in the loss with 14 kills. Antonéya Veasy Smith added nine kills and 13 digs while Callie Schriner finished with eight kills and 20 digs. Lisa Burger totaled nine kills and 14 digs while Lindy Melville finished with a team-high 22 assists. Emily Hilliker added 20 assists in the loss while Paige Fombelle finished with eight kills.
ELMHURST 3, CHICAGO 2 - Elmhurst once again built a two set lead and had to hold of a late charge from the University of Chicago to score a 27-25, 25-22, 16-25, 21-25, 15-13 victory.
Trailing 12-10 in the deciding fifth set, the Bluejays closed the match on a 5-1 run to earn the victory.
O'Hara tallied 16 kills and seven blocks to lead Elmhurst in the win. Meghan Mullaney added seven kills. Melville totaled a team-leading 16 assists while Erin Thill added 12 assists. Jameela Chaudhry recorded a team-high 25 digs in the victory.
Elmhurst plays at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh tournament on September 11-12.
