Elmhurst Softball Team Drops Twin Bill to Benedictine

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst College softball team slipped to 12-8 overall after dropping both games of a doubleheader to Benedictine University.

Benedictine (14-4) squeaked out a 3-1 victory in game one and took game two by a 9-1 final.
 
BENEDICTINE 3, ELMHURST 1 (Game One) – Benedictine banged out 10 hits to score a 3-1 victory over Elmhurst in the first game of the doubleheader.
 
The Eagles scored a run in the third and tacked on a run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Elmhurst scored a run in the bottom of the fifth when Becca Zumpf scored on a delayed steal.
 
Benedictine added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to account for the game's final run.
 
Elmhurst had scoring chances throughout the game, but the Bluejays failed to deliver a clutch hit with runners in scoring position. Elmhurst stranded eight runners on base for the contest. The Bluejays' best scoring chance came in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs, but a pop out, a strike out, and a ground out ended the inning.
 
Ashley Grice recorded two of the Bluejays' seven hits.
 
Lindsay Nauman (6-3) took the loss for the Bluejays. Nauman allowed seven hits and two runs (only one earned) in five innings of work. She walked two and fanned two.
 
Brittany Adcox (9-2) scattered seven hits and two walks while tossing a complete game for Benedictine. She struck out three while earning the victory.
 
BENEDICTINE, ELMHURST (Game Two) – Benedictine jumped out to a seven run lead and never looked back, cruising to the 9-1 win in six innings.
 
The Eagles started the game with four consecutive hits, leading to four runs in the first inning. Benedictine added a run in the second and scored three more runs in the third to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
 
Elmhurst got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI ground out from Julie Devine, but Benedictine got the run back quickly, scoring a run in the top of the fifth.
 
Vanessa Kalal (3-3) took the loss for Elmhurst. Kalal was tagged for eight hits and seven runs over three innings. She walked one while striking out three. Amber Schwarzinger finished up in relief, allowing two runs and two hits in three innings.
 
Stephanie Iori (1-1) scored the win for Benedictine. She limited Elmhurst hitters to only three hits and one run in six innings of work. She did not walk a batter and struck out five.
 
Elmhurst hosts Augustana College on Friday, April 10, at 1:00 p.m.
