Bluejay Softball Team Splits Pair With Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. - The Elmhurst College softball team upped its record to 13-13 overall and 2-8 in CCIW play after splitting a doubleheader at Millikin University. 

Elmhurst scored a 3-0 victory in game one, while Millikin (13-19, 3-5 CCIW) won game two 9-1.

ELMHURST 3, MILLIKIN 0 (Game One) - Vanessa Kalal (4-5) tossed her third shutout of the season while pitching Elmhurst to a 3-0 win over Millikin.

Kalal scattered eight hits and three walks while pitching the complete game. She struck out two and stranded 13 Millikin runners on base.

Kalal pitched out of jams in several innings. Millikin left the bases loaded in the second and fifth innings, and the Big Blue stranded seven runners who were in scoring position.

Ashley Grice provided all of Elmhurst's offensive punch in the victory. Grice put Elmhurst on the board in the second inning when she doubled home Melissa McCarthy. In the fourth inning, Michele Fournier led off with a triple and McCarthy reached base on a fielder's choice. Grice followed with a two-run double to give the Bluejays a 3-0 lead.

MILLIKIN 9, ELMHURST 1 (Game Two) - Millikin battered Elmhurst pitchers for 13 hits in nine runs to earn the doubleheader split.

Millikin scored a run in the first before the Bluejays tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a Big Blue error.

The Big Blue scored three times in the second and added another run in the in the third to take 5-1 lead.  Millikin scored a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh to pull away for the win.

Becca Zumpf recorded three of the Bluejays' seven hits in the loss. Maureen Roderick added two hits for the Bluejays.

Lindsay Nauman (6-6) took the loss for Elmhurst. Nauman was charged with four hits and four runs in 1.2 innings of work. She walked four and struck out one in the loss.

Elmhurst plays at Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday, April 19.
