ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College softball team fell to 12-10 overall and 1-5 in CCIW play following a doubleheader sweep by Augustana College.
Augustana (20-6, 4-2 CCIW) downed Elmhurst 13-8 in game one, and took game two by a 10-2 final score.
AUGUSTANA 13, ELMHURST 8 (Game One) - Augustana jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held off a late rally from Elmhurst to score a 13-8 victory in game one.
After stealing home in both the first and second innings, the Vikings led 2-0. Augustana blew the game open with a seven-run third inning to take a 9-0 lead.
Elmhurst chipped into the Vikings' lead in the bottom of the third. Amanda Bowlin blasted a two-run homer to left field to put Elmhurst on the scoreboard. Two batters later, Maureen Roderick smashed a solo homer to left field.
The Vikings answered back with four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 13-3 lead.
The Bluejays scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a wild pitch and a throwing error on Augustana. Elmhurst added two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Kendra Ostrander two-run single.
Becca Zumpf finished 4-for-4 at the plate and also drew a walk to lead the Bluejays' offense. Roderick added three hits and scored two runs in the loss.
Chrissy Rosin led the Vikings' offense with two hits. She also scored three runs and drove in three.
Erica Aten (4-1) earned the win for Augustana in relief. She pitched the final four innings and allowed seven hits and four earned runs.
Lindsay Nauman (6-4) took the loss for the Bluejays. She allowed seven hits and eight earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.
AUGUSTANA 10, ELMHURST 2 (Game Two) - Augustana earned the doubleheader sweep by topping Elmhurst 10-2 in a six-inning contest.
Elmhurst grabbed a quick 1-0 lead on a Julie Devine RBI single in the first.
Augustana quickly claimed the lead in the bottom of the inning as the Vikings' plated three runs, with two coming home on a Christina Trojanowski single. Augustana tacked on three more runs in the second to take a 6-1 lead.
Elmhurst scored a run in the fifth on a Rachel Pietrucha RBI double, but the Bluejays left runners at second and third to end the inning.
Augustana's Missy Fobert smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to put the Vikings up 9-2.
Brittany Snoreck ended the game in the bottom of the sixth when she led off the inning with a solo blast, giving Augustana the 10-2 victory due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Elmhurst was held to only four hits while the Vikings banged out 14.
Vanessa Kalal (3-4) took the loss for Elmhurst after allowing seven hits and four earned runs in two innings of work. She fanned two while not issuing a walk.
Sheldon Ritzheimer (8-1) earned the win for Augustana. She allowed just four hits and two runs in six innings of work. She walked four and struck out four in the win.
Elmhurst plays at North Park University on Thursday, April 16.
