Bluejay Softball Team Sweeps Two in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst College softball team continued its strong start to the 2009 season by winning a pair of games at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. With the victories, the Bluejays ran their record to 5-1 on the season.

Elmhurst began the day with a 7-2 win over Lawrence University, and finished the day with a 6-0 shutout win over Buffalo State College.

ELMHURST 7, LAWRENCE 2 - Elmhurst moved to 4-1 on the season with a 7-2 win over Lawrence University.

Amber Schwarzinger pitched four innings to earn the win for Elmhurst. Schwarzinger allowed just one hit and one earned run in four innings of work. She walked one while striking out four. Lindsay Nauman pitched three scoreless of innings of relief to record the save. Nauman walked one while fanning three.

Maggie Yagen led the Bluejays' offense with two triples. Yagen also scored a run and drove in a run in the win. Maureen Roderick finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Amanda Bowlin also recorded a pair of hits. Jill Karsa knocked home two runs in the victory.

ELMHURST 6, BUFFALO STATE 0 - Vanessa Kalal tossed a complete game shutout to lead Elmhurst to a 6-0 victory over Buffalo State College. Kalal scattered five hits and allowed just one walk over seven innings. She struck out two in the win.

Elmhurst got on the scoreboard in the second inning when three straight two-out triples gave the Bluejays a 2-0 lead. The Bluejays added three runs in the fourth inning with a pair of runs scoring on a Gina Venier triple.

Lauren Ventrella and Venier sparked the Bluejays' offense with two hits apiece. Venier finished with a double, a triple, and two runs driven in while Ventrella tripled and drove in two runs. Becca Zumpf scored a pair of runs in the win.
