CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst College softball team kicked off the 2009 season by scoring a pair of victories at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. Elmhurst (2-0) began the day with a 10-2 six-inning victory over Babson College, and capped the day with a 9-6 win over Keene State College.
ELMHURST 10, BABSON 2 - Elmhurst began the 2009 campaign with a six-inning victory over Babson. Vanessa Kalal pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs to earn the victory. Kalal scattered four hits and six walks over six innings of work. She struck out four in the victory.
Julie Devine ended the game with a two-run walk-off triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Bluejays the eight-run mercy rule victory.
Melissa McCarthy had a solid day at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBI. Jill Karsa and Becca Zumpf recorded two hits apiece in the victory. Zumpf scored three runs while Karsa scored twice in the win. Liz McAllister added a pair of RBI in the victory.
ELMHURST 9, KEENE STATE 6 - The Bluejays moved to 2-0 on the season by toppling Keene State 9-6. Lindsay Nauman made the start and scored the win for Elmhurst. Kalal ended a Keene State scoring threat in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save. Nauman worked 5.2 innings and surrendered just three hits while striking out six.
Zumpf drove in a pair of runs to spark the Bluejays' offense. Maureen Roderick scored three runs and drove in a run. Amanda Bowlin, Rachel Pietrucha, and Jill Karsa each added an RBI in the win.
