KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team had its three game winning streak snapped in a 70-44 loss at Carthage College.
Elmhurst (13-10, 6-6 CCIW) fell behind early and never led in the contest. After pulling to within one point early in the first half, the Bluejays quickly slipped behind as Carthage used an 11-0 run to open up a 19-7 lead. Elmhurst would not be able to cut Carthage's lead to single digits for the rest of the game. The Bluejays trailed 36-22 at halftime and fell behind by 23 points early in the second half. Elmhurst was held off the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes to start the second half. Carthage (16-7, 8-4 CCIW) went on to cruise to the 70-44 victory.
Turnovers and poor shooting doomed the Bluejays. Elmhurst shot under 20 percent for the majority of the first half and finished the game shooting just 25.9 percent (15-of-58) from the floor. The Bluejays were also ice cold from 3-point range, hitting just 2-of-13 attempts (15.4 percent). Elmhurst turned the ball over 17 teams leading to 25 points for Carthage. Elmhurst outrebounded Carthage 45-35, including a 24-14 edge on the offensive glass. The Bluejays managed just 14 second chance points off the 24 offensive rebounds.
Carthage finished the contest shooting 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the field, including 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from long distance. The Lady Reds outscored Elmhurst in the paint 36-16.
Lyndsie Long led Elmhurst with 12 points in the loss.
Meghan Merklein added 10 points and seven rebounds while
Brittany Bobruk totaled six points in the loss.
Carthage was led by Lisa Gartelos' 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Katie Klemke and Heather Glimore added eight points apiece while Katie Jarger totaled seven points. Eleven different players totaled points for the Lady Reds in the victory.
With the loss, Elmhurst slipped into a three-way tie for the fourth and final spot for the CCIW Tournament. The Bluejays have identical 6-6 CCIW records with Millikin University and North Central College. Elmhurst travels to Millikin on Saturday, February 21.
