KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst University men's soccer team opened conference play with a 1-0 shutout victory over Carthage College on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Art Keller Field.
The match remained scoreless through the first half as Niyen Ruffin made three saves to keep the Firebirds off the board. The Bluejays created chances after halftime, taking nine of its 14 shots in the second half.
The winning moment came at 88:22 when Loretto Lopez connected a pass to Brian Biederman on the right side of the goal to give the Bluejays the lead with less than two minutes remaining. Ruffin made one more save in the final minute to preserve the shutout.
Andrew Walters led Elmhurst (3-3-1, 1-0-0 CCIW) with five shots, including two on goal. Biederman added four shots and Ashton Kerrigan took three. Ruffin finished with five saves as the Bluejays outshot Carthage (2-4-1, 0-1-0 CCIW) 14-12.
Up Next: Elmhurst returns home to face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday, Sept. 27. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Langhorst Field.
