Bluejays Rally for a Lead but Fall Short

Illinois Wesleyan 8, Elmhurst 7
W: Brennan Tomhave L: Logan Leach (0-2)
HR: O'Connell (1)

Elmhurst put together one of their strongest offensive stretches this season in the middle innings, highlighted by Brett Vercruysse's standout performance at the plate. Vercruysse led going 3-for-5 day, driving in two runs and scoring twice, consistently producing in key moments. The Bluejays' lone home run came off the bat of Timothy O'Connell, with a two-run fourth inning to spark the offense. That swing jumpstarted a major rally, as Elmhurst scored three runs in the fourth and followed it up with another three-run inning in the fifth. During that stretch, RBI hits from Rock Smith, Adan Nieves, and Vercruysse, again helped Elmhurst build a 6-1 lead.

Offensively, Elmhurst totaled seven runs on 11 hits, with levelness spread throughout the lineup. Vercruysse's three-hit, two-RBI performance led the team, while Rock Smith added two hits and two RBIs. Timothy O'Connell added a home run and finished with two RBIs, and Adan Nieves came in with two hits and an RBI. Javier Cervantes and Connor Drowns each scored runs, while the Bluejays also showed aggressiveness on the bases with two stolen bases from Vercruysse.

On the mound, Landon Banaszynski delivered a strong start for 6.0 innings, striking out three. Logan Leach followed in relief, throwing 1.2 innings with one strikeout, allowing just two hits in his outing. Marty Fraga closed out the game with 1.1 innings, striking out four. The Bluejays' bullpen combined for eight strikeouts across the game.
