Elmhurst University Baseball fell a run short against Dominican, 7-6, trading the lead in on their home diamond. The Bluejays answered an early run in the first inning with RBI singles from Zach Konrad and Rock Smith to take a 2-1 lead. Elmhurst continued to break through the game, tying the score in the fourth on a solo home run from Adan Nieves and again in the fifth on an RBI from Evan Johnson. After falling behind 7-5 in the sixth, the Bluejays added one more run in the seventh on a wild pitch that allowed Javier Cervantes to score. With the effort at the forefront the Bluejays loaded bases pushing for another run till the final inning.
Offensively, Elmhurst totaled six runs on nine hits, with Zach Konrad leading the way with three hits and an RBI. Rock Smith added two hits and an RBI, while Adan Nieves tabbed a home run and finished with an RBI. Javier Cervantes scored twice reaching base multiple times, while Brett Vercruysse and Evan Johnson each added a hit. The Bluejays also showed aggressiveness on the bases with stolen bases from Konrad, Smith, and Cervantes, and drew four walks as a team.
On the mound, Michael Conway led the Bluejays on the mound, going 4.0 innings while allowing five runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Jack Krueger took the loss in relief, allowing two runs over 2.0 innings with one strikeout. Robert Brenneman closed out the game with 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three.Â
The Bluejays return to Butterfield tomorrow April 8, facing off against Illinois Wesleyan to continue their conference play.
