WHEATON, Ill. – The Bluejay sprinters made their marks on the early outdoor season, posting a number of top times in the CCIW while competing at the Wheaton Invitational on Tuesday.
Four athletes cracked the top ten on the CCIW performance list across three events, highlighted by Carmela Woods and Alma Diabi's times in the women's 100 and 200 meters. Woods placed 2nd in the 100, with a personal-record time of 12.19, good for 2nd this season in the CCIW. In the 200, Woods brought home the win, finishing in 25.17 for the fastest time in the league so far this season.
Diabi finished 6th and 8th in the 100 and 200 respectively, setting personal bests in both events. The freshman now ranks as the CCIW's 7th-fastest in the 100 meters (12.66), and 10th in the 200 (26.18).
Freshman Jasha James also had a top time in the 100, placing 3rd overall in the evenet with a time of 12.39, good for 3rd in the CCIW. In the women's 400 meters, Violett Schramm's time of 59.78 won the event, and ranks 5th in the conference this season. In the men's 400 meters, junior Zaiden Smith placed 3rd with a personal-record 50.2, good for 2nd in the CCIW.
Olivia Brach had a strong showing in both hurdles events, placing 2nd in the women's 100 meter hurdles as well as the 400 meter hurdles. Both times were personal records, as Brach now ranks 3rd in the CCIW in the 400 hurdles (1:09.5), and 7th in the 100 hurdles (16.29).
Michael Bailey improved his time in the men's 800 meters, with a season-best mark of 1:59.56 to place 3rd overall and move up to 5th in the CCIW this year.
In the field events, Jaedon Thompson matched a personal best in the men's pole vault, clearing 3.80m (12' 5.5") to finish T-5th, while Annabeth Webb tied for the top spot in the women's high jump, clearing 1.32m (4' 4").
Next up for the Bluejays is the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships, hosted in part on campus at Langhorst Field. The action begins on Thursday, April 9 with the throwing events being held at Wheaton College. The rest of the field events and all track events take place at Elmhurst on Friday and Saturday, April 10-11.
