Elmhurst University baseball dropped a 21-1 contest to Macalester on Saturday, facing an early deficit that proved difficult to overcome. The Bluejays found a breakthrough in the third inning, but were unable to generate momentum against Macalester's pitching staff.
Elmhurst's offense showed fight in the middle innings, highlighted by a strong third inning. Timothy O'Connell reached and later came around to score, while Ryder Johnson delivered a key extra-base hit with a double to create pressure. Evan Johnson drove in Elmhurst's lone run with an RBI groundout. Ryder Johnson led the way with two hits, while Brett Vercruysse added a pair of hits of his own, helping Elmhurst total six hits on the day.
On the mound, Elmhurst utilized Landon Banaszynski at the start. Michael Conway provided a solid bridge out of the bullpen, not allowing a hit over his inning of work, while Fox Weymouth and Ryan McGinley combined to carry multiple innings and record key strikeouts down the stretch.
Elmhurst continues their Florida play with a double header, Saturday against DePauw University at 2:45 CT.
