Elmhurst University baseball opened the doubleheader with early momentum, scoring in the first inning, but ultimately fell to DePauw, 9-8, in a back-and-forth contest.
Elmhurst started with a lead in the bottom of the first when Timothy O'Connell reached first on an error and advanced into scoring position before rounding home after Rock Smith repeated, giving the Bluejays a 1-0 lead. After DePauw responded, Elmhurst answered again in the third inning as Ryder Johnson singled, stole second, wIth Smith's help eventually scored to tie the game at 2-2. The Bluejays continued to chip away in the fourth when Brett Vercruysse came across on Tommy Wichger's RBI groundout to keep Elmhurst within striking distance.
The offense found another spark in the fifth inning. Ryder Johnson singled and later scored on a rewarding RBI double from Zach Konrad. Moments later, Brett Vercruysse delivered with an RBI single to bring Konrad home, cutting the deficit to 9-5. Elmhurst saved its biggest swing for the seventh inning, when Evan Johnson reached after Rock Smith launched a two-run home run to center field, pulling the Bluejays within two runs. Shortly after, Zach Konrad followed with a solo home run to left field, bringing Elmhurst within one at 9-8 and capping a three-run inning. The Bluejays added on with base runners, including a single from Javier Cervantes, but DePauw was able to hold on.
On the mound, Adan Nieves opened for Elmhurst, working 4.1 innings and recording four strikeouts while battling through the early innings. Logan Leach provided solid relief out of the bullpen, throwing 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and limiting further damage to give the offense a chance to mount its late comeback.

Elmhurst University baseball fell to DePauw, 8-0, in game two of the doubleheader, as the Bluejays were unable to capitalize on early opportunities at the plate. Elmhurst picked up two hits in the second inning from Rock Smith and Brett Vercruysse, but DePauw responded, including cutting down a runner at the plate to keep the Bluejays off the scoreboard. Elmhurst continued to battle offensively, adding hits from Adan Nieves and Zach Konrad later in the game, with no scoring result to show.
On the mound, Aidan Nelson made the start for Elmhurst, working 4.0 innings with three strikeouts while limiting the Tigers. Charlie Hooper and Robert Drake followed in relief, combining to cover the middle innings, while Marty Fraga closed out the game with a scoreless inning and one strikeout to finish the effort.
The Bluejays return to their Florida play against Hamilton Monday at 10:00 AM.
