ELMHURST, Ill. – Vinnie Adjahoungbeta led the Bluejays with a career-high 27 points on Wednesday night, as Elmhurst battled back from a 12-point deficit against Millikin but ultimately came up short, 83-77 in overtime inside R.A. Faganel Hall.
The sophomore went 8-for-12 from the floor, including a 3-for-4 performance from beyond the arc while going 8-for-10 at the free throw line. Two other Bluejays finished in double figures, with Dominic Trelenberg collecting 19 points, and Aidyn Boone recording his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards.
Boone's three-pointer would give Elmhurst an early 5-2 lead in the opening minutes, before the Big Blue scored seven straight to move in front, 9-5 at the 15:35 mark of the first half. The visitors would remain in front throughout the first half, going up by as much as nine, 22-13 with 11:20 remaining. Elmhurst would respond, with back-to-back threes from Adjahoungbeta and Luke Smith to cut the deficit to three, 24-21 with eight minutes before the halftime break.
Elmhurst would trail be three at the half, but Millikin came out strong to start the second period, opening on an 11-3 run to lead 45-34 with 17:11 left. With just under nine minutes to play, the Big Blue led by 12, before a three from Jack Cherry and another bucket from Adjahoungbeta started the Bluejay rally.
Trelenberg would score in the paint with 1:42 to play, closing the gap to five, and a three from Adjahongbeta with 35 seconds left made it a one-score game, 67-65. After a pair of Millikin free throws, the sophomore would get sent to the line, converting both attempts, then after a steal, would step up again with two game-tying free throws to send the game to overtime.
The offense would go cold in the extra session, as Elmhurst went 2-for-8 from the floor in overtime and Millikin opened with seven straight points to retake control and close out the game.
The Bluejays will look to bounce back on Saturday, when they host Augustana. Tipoff with the Vikings is set for 4:15 p.m.
