Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Smith's 22 points leads Jays past Augustana

ELMHURST, Ill. – Freshman Luke Smith finished with a career-high 22 points, as Elmhurst snapped a three-game streak over Augustana, winning 77-64 inside R.A. Faganel Hall.

The Bluejays got off to a hot start, knocking down four three-pointers in the first 2:14 of game time, including a pair from Smith, who finished with five treys in the win. Augustana responded to briefly take the lead with a three at the 15:02 mark, 14-13, but another three from Smith quickly put the Jays back on top with a lead they would hold the rest of the way.

Elmhurst would push the lead to double-digits later in the first half, going up by as much as 11 with Smith's layup with 6:20 remaining in the opening period. The Vikings would close the gap down the stretch, ending the half on a six-point run to cut into the Bluejay lead, 35-31.

The Vikings would pull to within three points, 38-35 early in the second half, but Elmhurst would pull away by holding Augustana to eight minutes with just one field goal. The Jays would out-score their opponents 14-8 during that stretch to extend the lead to 52-43 with 9:06 remaining. A layup with the foul by Smith would give Elmhurst a 16-point lead following the free throw, 66-50 with 3:23 left to put the game away.

Smith would finish 8-for-14 from the floor in the win, while dealing out a team-high five assists. Dominic Trelenberg and Vinnie Adjahoungbeta each scored 17 points, with Trelenberg picking up his third double-double of the season, recording a season-high 13 assists. Aidyn Boone finished in double figures, with ten points and six boards in the win.

The Bluejays will look to keep the momentum rolling next week, as they start a two-game road swing at Carroll on Wednesday, Jan. 14. Tipoff with the Pioneers is set for 7:00 p.m.
