ELMHURST, Ill. – It would take two clutch buckets from junior Aidyn Boone to get the job done, but Elmhurst Men's Basketball took their third straight victory on Saturday afternoon with an 82-80 overtime win over North Central inside R.A. Faganel Hall.
After leading by as much as 15 in the first half, the Bluejays found themselves trailing by four with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation. A key three-pointer from Dominic Trelenberg would set the table for Boone's game-tying three-pointer with just five seconds left. Tied 74-74, the half-court attempt from North Central would just miss to the right, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Elmhurst would lead by four but a late pair of buckets for the Cardinals would tie the game at 80-80. In the closing seconds, Boone would score off the missed shot, grabbing the offensive rebound and putting away the game-winner as time expired.
After a slower, low-scoring start to the first half, the Jays built a double-digit lead with a 16-2 run to go up 32-20 at the 2:18 mark. A three from Trelenberg gave the Bluejays their largest lead of the game, 38-23 before a pair of North Central free throws made it a 13-point lead at the break.
The Cardinals would reclaim the lead late in the second half, using a run of 13 unanswered points to go back up 68-66 with 2:03 remaining, before Elmhurst rallied to force overtime.
Five Jays would finish in double figures, with Vinnie Adjahoungbeta leading the team with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Luke Smith scored 17 points, while Boone collected 16, Trelenberg 14, and Sebastian Blachut 11.
