ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Elmhurst University men's soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 2-1 road victory at Rockford University on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless opening half despite outshooting Rockford 13-1, the Bluejays broke through just after halftime. In the 47th minute, Caden Sultzbaugh converted a penalty kick to put Elmhurst on top. Rockford answered in the 58th minute when Francesco Stoner scored off an assist from Rejhan Jakupi to even the score at 1-1.
The Bluejays quickly regained the lead in the 64th minute as Sultzbaugh netted his second goal of the match, finishing a setup from Mati Aguilar. Elmhurst's defense and goalkeeper Jakub Wiktorczyk closed the door the rest of the way, with Wiktorczyk totaling two saves on the afternoon.
Elmhurst outshot Rockford 20-5, including an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal, and held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Sultzbaugh led the Bluejays with four shots, all on target, while Andrew Walters, Jacob Wipke, and Dario Gutierrez each added multiple attempts.
With the win, Elmhurst improved to 1-1 on the season and will return home this Wednesday, September 3, to host University of Dubuque at 7:00 p.m.
