ALBION, Mich. - The Elmhurst University women's volleyball team dropped their final two matches of the Albion Invitational Saturday morning, falling to Wisconsin Lutheran in the opener before dropping to host Albion in the finale.
Elmhurst fell to 0-3 on the young season with the two losses. Wisconsin Lutheran improved to 1-1, while Albion maintained a perfect record, moving to 2-0 with the win.
The Bluejays dropped its morning match against Wisconsin Lutheran, falling 3–1 (25–14, 19–25, 25–21, 25–21). After a slow start, the Bluejays bounced back to take the second set behind strong play at the net but could not sustain the momentum in the final two frames.
Keely Larson paced Elmhurst with 10 kills while hitting .364, adding three blocks and a service ace. Nyah Moustakas chipped in five kills and a team-high five blocks, and Blair Johnson added four kills with four block assists. Setter Freddie Temple directed the offense with 28 assists and contributed six kills on a .545 hitting percentage. Defensively, Alexis Casey tallied 15 digs and Gianna Ptaszek notched eight digs. The Bluejays finished with 39 kills, eight blocks, and 50 digs, but were undone by 18 service errors.
In their second match of the day, Elmhurst battled host Albion but came up short in four sets, 3–1 (25–17, 22–25, 27–25, 25–20). The Bluejays responded with a second-set win to even the contest, then pushed the Britons to extra points in the third before falling just short.
Ashley Clardy led the Bluejays with 10 kills and added two blocks, while Blair Johnson registered eight kills, two service aces, and four total blocks. Larson again was effective at the net with nine kills and five blocks, and Olivia Mendell handed out 10 assists with two blocks. Temple chipped in 18 assists and three aces, while Alexis Casey anchored the defense with 18 digs. Elmhurst collected 37 kills, eight service aces, and 10 blocks in the match.
The Bluejays hit the court again next Wednesday, Sept. 3, on the road at Edgewood University at 7:00 p.m.
